Facial Hair Competition Categories and Descriptions

So let it be written, so let it be done. Are you sent by the chosen one? Judging for this epic facial hair competition will be done by a panel of 5 judges. Each judge will score each contestant on a 1-10 scale.

1. Ladies’ Faux Beard Natural
Category Description: This category is open to everyone. The goal is to create the most realistic looking facial hair of any style. Creativity and craftsmanship is encouraged. The fake facial hair should be as true-to-form, life-like, and convincing as possible.

No styling aids are permitted, aside from those needed to affix the beard to one’s face, if desired.

2. Ladies’ Fake Beard Freestyle
Category Description: This category is open to everyone. Create the most imaginative, creative, and fantastic facial hair of any style you can. Creativity and craftsmanship are encouraged. The choice of materials is completely open. The more imaginative the facial hair, the better

3. Muttonchops and Sideburns
Category Description: Must be a true sideburn, with no natural or shaven gap below the ear. The chin MUST be shaven, and hair is optional on the upper lip, but will not be considered during judging.

No styling aids are permitted.

4. Partial Beard Freestyle
Category Description: A freestyle partial beard is any facial hair that is neither a full beard, nor only a moustache. Styling aids are permitted. This category includes the free design and creative styling of the facial hair. All partial beards that do not qualify for other categories may compete here.

Beards should appear and feel free of styling products.

5. Full Beard Freestyle
Category Description: A styled full beard is a full beard, with all parts of the beard and moustache grown, styled with any product. Styling aids are permitted. This category includes the free design and creative styling of the beard. All full beards that do not qualify for other categories may compete here.

6. Whaler
Category Description: A natural partial beard extending from ear to ear in an unbroken line, with no moustache. Also known as the Donegal.

No styling aids are permitted.

7. Goatee
Category Description: A natural partial beard extending from the chin only. Sideburns must be at least 1” from the goatee on either side. Styled moustaches are not permitted.

No styling aids are permitted.

8. Natural Moustache
Category Description: The moustache as it grows naturally, the more natural the better! A natural moustache is any length of hair grown from above the upper lip and underneath the nose, with no styling products permitted. Chin hair is NOT permitted in this category. Contestants with chin hair will be entered into the category fitting their facial hair. Sideburns unconnected to the moustache are permissible. They cannot be overstated, and WILL NOT be considered during judging.

9. Styled Moustache
Category Description: A styled mustache is any length of hair grown from above the upper lip and underneath the nose, styled with any product. Styling aids are permitted. Chin hair is NOT permitted in this category. Contestants with chin hair will be entered into the category fitting their facial hair. Sideburns unconnected to the moustache are permissible. They cannot be overstated, and WILL NOT be considered during judging.

10. Full Beard Under 4″
Category Description: This groomed full beard is a full beard, with all parts of the beard and moustache grown, expertly brushed, trimmed, shaped, and generally maintained, with minimal styling products and methods. The beard must be less than 4” (as measured from the bottom of the lip). Styled moustaches are not permitted. Products should be limited to refinements for overall moustache and beard shape.

11. 4″ – 8” Full Beard
Category Description: A groomed full beard is a full beard, with all parts of the beard and moustache grown, expertly brushed, trimmed, shaped, and generally maintained, with minimal styling products and methods. The beard must be less than 8” (as measured from the bottom of the lip). Styled moustaches are not permitted. Products should be limited to refinements for overall moustache and beard shape.

Beards should appear and feel free of styling products.

12. 8″ – 12” Full Beard
Category Description: A groomed full beard is a full beard, with all parts of the beard and moustache grown, expertly brushed, trimmed, shaped, and generally maintained, with minimal styling products and methods. The beard must be longer than 8″ and less than 12” (as measured from the bottom of the lip). Styled moustaches are not permitted. Products should be limited to refinements for overall moustache and beard shape.

Beards should appear and feel free of styling products.

13. Full Beard 12″+
Category Description: A natural full beard is a full beard, with all parts of the beard and moustache naturally grown, with no styling products permitted. The beard must be longer than 12” (as measured from the bottom of the lip). Styled moustaches are not permitted. Products should be limited to refinements for overall moustache and beard shape.

No styling aids are permitted.

14. Full beard Natural w/ Styled Moustache
Category Description: A natural full beard is a full beard, with all parts of the beard and moustache naturally grown, with no styling products permitted in the beard. A styled moustache is allowed, with any length of hair grown from above the upper lip (not incorporating the beard) and underneath the nose, styled with any product.

Styling aids are permitted in this category, for the moustache alone.
